2 Corinthians 3: 12-18
12 Since this new covenant gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory fading away. 14 But the people’s minds were hardened, and even to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, a veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ. 15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, then the veil is taken away. 17 Now, the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, he gives freedom. 18 And all of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more.

When Moses came down Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments his face glowed from being in God’s presence. He had to put on a veil to keep the people from being terrified by the brightness of his face and from seeing it fade away. (Exodus 34:29-35) This literal veil illustrates the spiritual veil which covers the hearts of those who hear the Word and turn away from it. Pride, hardness of heart and refusal to repent are what veil the hearts and minds of people. Because of the condition of their hearts Christ is veiled from them. But when anyone turns to Christ and becomes a Christian, the veil is lifted. The Law cannot save us, it only points out our sin. But when we trust Christ to save us, He removes the heavy burden of trying to please Him. By trusting Christ we are loved, accepted, forgiven, and freed to live for Him. If you are trying to please God by keeping certain rules or ceremonies, your heart is veiled. You will not be able to please Him. Only by believing in the work Christ did on the cross will you be made right with God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” ( John 3: 16)
